My method is a method of repetition. My practice is a practice of time-consumption. I set out to make work in an excessively inefficient way that creates a material visualisation of time within each piece. By selecting simple tasks of transformation but performing them in a complicated and time-consuming way, they make up this practice of time-consumption; for example, changing the surface colour of a piece of fabric with needle and sewing thread through hundreds of thousands of stitches, or the act of unravelling – a slow reversal of the production of a fabric that takes more time to unravel than to produce. In a way, this is a gathering of repetitive actions within materials where the primary focus is to take time, whilst also asking questions about the role of craft and the handmade in a time where everything seems to be accelerating towards growing efficiency. However much we long for the past or plan for the future – our lives are still lived in the present. Time only exists through our measuring of it, and I choose to measure it in materials. These works are Timepieces that together create the Fabric of Time.
